'Let it snow, let it snow...'

Wait a minute! Make it stop! Please!

I'm all for cheery Christmas carols and catchy tunes that lift our spirits and bring back memories of great times with family and friends, but please. Whoever wrote that song obviously never endured a Chicago winter or had to dig a buried car out of a snow bank at the crack of dawn just to go to work.

Today marked the true beginning of winter for us Chicagoans: first real snow (a couple inches), more to come overnight (half a foot) and frigid temperatures to boot (20 degrees). I didn't bother to mention the wind because you already know I'm in Chicago (a.k.a. the Windy City). Off topic, but worth mentioning in case you're ever in a heated game of Trivial Pursuit and this question comes up: Chicago got its nickname from the hot air our politicians are known for and not the brutal wind that whips off Lake Michigan.

The elements aside, Chicago is a beautiful city at Christmastime. Downtown is wrapped like a glistening present under the tree and there's always something festive to do between Thanksgiving and New Year's Day. Still I can't help but think about all the work that needs to be done in, on and around our home because of my locale. To wit, when you're reading this I'll likely be trudging up and down my 90-foot driveway pushing snow and slush this way and that, singing a happy tune to take my mind off the chore at hand. Rest assured, it will not be "Let it Snow."

Comments:

I don't know anything about a Chicago winter, but Philly winters aren't that great either. In Philly I swear every road you drive on is completely covered with ice during the winter season. I can't step out of my house without hpoing and praying I don't fall first...
